Two things that don’t mix are soaring and salmonella. But in Portugal on this beautiful day, that’s just the combo we found ourselves dealing with.

After arriving in Europe and buying a campervan, we decided to drive the entire coast of Spain, which meant we’d also be driving the entire coastline of Portugal. One day, we found a beautiful secluded beach with winds that were perfect for soaring.
We soared until our hearts were content and ended the day with a beach sunset that was worthy of being on a postcard in which we captured this beautiful pic with our soaring machine, the Swing Apus 14 RS.

Then, all hell broke loose. One of our crew members, Jamie, did not feel well and spent most of the day lying in the sand instead of flying.
We opted for a hotel as his condition worsened. We figured it was a cold/flu until hours later, the rest of the crew began to break out in cold sweats and began to projectile vomit.

After a few discussions, we realized it was salmonella been from easy over eggs we ate that morning before the soaring session.
It took almost a week to get back to “normal”. And of course, this came during a record heat wave in Portugal, which are rough when you live in a van.But after a week, we were able to go full steam again and continue our journey driving the entire coast of Spain and Portugal, hitting up as any soaring sites along the way.

Note to self- cook eggs a little more while traveling
