WHO IT’S FOR

The SPHERA 2 RS.

We developed the SPHERA 2 RS for experienced XC and competition pilots who fly long distances at a high level and want to combine maximum performance with clear, predictable handling. Accordingly, we recommend it to experienced pilots with solid EN-C experience, a confident active flying style, and recent performance SIV training.

Like the first-generation SPHERA RS, we planned the SPHERA 2 RS as an XC competition wing with EN-D certification. All the more remarkable for us was how accessible the final prototypes felt to fly, despite an aspect ratio of 6.9 and 75 cells.

This accessible handling, even in extreme flight manoeuvres, was impressively confirmed during flight testing by the DHV test centre.

None of this changes its original DNA. The SPHERA 2 RS remains a high-performance two-liner for experienced pilots who want more than a typical EN-C two-liner and are ready to take a deliberate step into a higher performance segment.

That makes it especially interesting for pilots who think beyond the classic EN-C two-liner class and want to combine maximum performance with exceptionally accessible handling.

DEVELOPMENT

Rethought from the ground up.

With the SPHERA 2 RS we took a completely new path, with one clear priority: the unmistakable SPHERA DNA was to be preserved, while being consistently evolved into the second generation.

After numerous flow simulations and benchmarks, we developed a noticeably faster and even more stable profile. RAST was further refined and, as already done with the LIBRA RS, moved further forward into the area directly above the pilot. This provides balanced pitch stability and a calm, controlled flying feel, even at high speeds and in turbulent air.

Together with the new profile, the shape of the shark nose was aerodynamically optimized. It supports stable internal pressure and helps the wing remain shape-stable across the entire speed range.

To reduce billowing in the leading edge, double 3D-shaping is used. As a result, the sail sits cleaner, profile fidelity is improved, and the leading edge stays precisely formed even under load.

The brake works via a cable-gathering system that shapes the trailing edge in a targeted way and gives the wing precise control input. The SPHERA 2 RS thus responds more directly, more cleanly, and more efficiently to control inputs, without losing its stability and calm.

Core Section

In paragliders with RAST, the canopy is divided internally by one or more fabric panels, some with valves, running perpendicular to the direction of flight, separating it into different (pressure) sections. This makes it possible to influence the airflows inside the canopy. The principle is comparable to a bulkhead, e.g. in a tank.

With RAST, the equalizing airflows inside the paraglider canopy can be regulated through defined openings. This applies both during inflation (launch) and during deflation. In a pressure loss situation, for example caused by a canopy disturbance, the relative internal pressure of the CORE section increases, while the BUFFER section absorbs the incoming energy through deformation. Furthermore, RAST can be used as an additional tension layer in addition to the leading and trailing edges, which has a positive effect on flight comfort. Because RAST connects the ribs across the entire profile height, the construction has a stiffening effect, and reinforcements and/or stiffening elements can be reduced or even fully replaced through this particular construction approach.

The idea for the SPHERA was born from the wish of Maurizio Bottegal, designer Alessio Casolla, and the entire development team to consistently rethink a modern 2-liner with Ram Air Section Technology.

On the SPHERA 2 RS, RAST sits further forward in the profile. Exactly where the pitch moment determines flight comfort and performance.

Especially on a high-performance 2-liner, dividing the canopy into two pressure sections brings a decisive advantage. The SPHERA 2 RS stays clear, calm, and predictable, even when gliding fast in turbulent air. It delivers very direct, precise feedback without constantly demanding the pilot’s attention. That leaves more time to focus on your flight.

The RAST band forms an additional vertical tension layer inside the canopy, running perpendicular to the classic rib structure and spanning the entire wing. This structural backbone is unique in paraglider construction and gives the wing control exactly where it matters in active air: in the pitch moment, as a pendulum stabilizer above the pilot, and in the cohesion of the entire canopy.

The difference shows in active air. The canopy pendulums less around the pitch axis. It stays compact, and movements around the lateral axis are not only damped, but translated into calm, usable pitch behavior.

As a result, the SPHERA 2 RS loses less performance through pendulum motion. It pulls cleanly and consistently into rising air masses and holds its performance where less stable canopies begin to struggle.

For you as a pilot, that means: more control, less correcting, and more mental capacity on long flights.

The launch behavior also benefits from the new RAST setup. Adjusted RAST valve openings mean the canopy fills more controlled and more evenly. As a result, the SPHERA 2 RS climbs above the pilot more easily, more clearly, and more predictably, a noticeable advantage on demanding launches and in changing conditions.

RAST really shows its strength in canopy disturbances and in extreme flight behavior. When the front Buffer Section collapses in turbulence, the rear Core Section holds pressure longer and dampens the collapse.

The bulkhead helps prevent a complete deflation of the canopy, even in large accelerated collapses.

The result: less altitude loss, faster reopening, lower cravat tendency, and better brake control.

RAST is therefore the “Silent Backbone” , the backbone of the SPHERA 2 RS. It works in the background, without dominating the flight character. It stabilizes, calms, and reduces pilot load, especially on long flights and in demanding conditions. As a result, the SPHERA 2 RS flies not only powerfully, but also remarkably efficiently, focused, and fatigue-free.

Nitinol is a high-strength, temperature- and corrosion-resistant shape-memory alloy. The name Nitinol is an acronym for Nickel Titanium Naval Ordnance Laboratory. SWING was one of the first paraglider manufacturers to commit, long-term, to this material, well known from medical technology, as a leading-edge reinforcement in paraglider construction.

On the SPHERA 2 RS, the Nitinol reinforcements provide a permanently knife-sharp leading edge and maximum profile fidelity. The stiffeners in the upper and lower sail are also made from this kink-, temperature-, and moisture-resistant shape-memory alloy.

So you can be sure that no unwanted deformations on the canopy will impair the performance of the SPHERA 2 RS, even when the canopy has not been packed or stored optimally.

We rethought the profile of the SPHERA 2 RS completely. The goal was to once again significantly increase aerodynamic efficiency, and to translate that into more usable performance, higher top speed, and a strong XC competition DNA.

The performance profile, developed specifically for the SPHERA 2 RS, was given a double 3D-shaping in the leading-edge area. This reduces billowing at the intake and improves profile fidelity across a wider speed range.

The ribs are consistently aligned with the airflow from the wing center outward. This keeps the aerodynamic quality of the profile as high as possible across the entire wingspan. Additional miniribs carry this precision through to the trailing edge and ensure clean separation.

The result: more efficiency, more speed, and a profile that delivers its performance not only at trim, but above all when accelerated in XC and competition use.

For the SPHERA 2 RS, we tested and refined the new profile with different variations of the shark nose in our CFD software.

The result is an aerodynamically optimized and shape-stable shark nose that specifically supports the internal pressure in the wing. In combination with RAST, this keeps the SPHERA 2 RS extremely stable, even at high speed and in turbulent air.

On the SPHERA 2 RS we use a completely new line material mix, designed for a particularly durable and trim-stable build.

The main lines and the first gallery are made of trim-stable, unsheathed Edelrid Technora. The second gallery uses unsheathed Dyneema from Liros. This combination provides precise force transmission, high shape stability, and long-lasting trim over many flying hours.

The optimized line diameter of 1.7 to 0.4 mm significantly reduces aerodynamic drag. This improves aerodynamic efficiency, especially against the wind and in turbulent air, where every detail counts.

Thanks to clear color coding in magenta, blue, and orange, the lines remain easy to see and to sort even without a sheath. The high stiffness of the line material also reduces the tendency for knots to form in daily use.

The SPHERA 2 RS riser consists of two main risers.

The split A-riser provides a uniform angle of attack across the entire speed range and allows easy “big ears”, also in combination with the speed system. The ergonomic “T-Bar,” developed specifically for the SPHERA 2 RS, can be fixed quickly and flexibly at the desired position on the B-riser, making it easier to control the canopy via the rear risers.
